Justin Abraham

Position: Portfolio Manager

Sector: Technology, Media, and Telecommunication

Profile: Justin is currently a fourth year student at the Telfer School of Management, specializing in Management Information Systems and Analytics (MISA) and finance. After moving to Ottawa, Justin took a notice for the astounding amount of diversity within in the city, which has opened up his perspective and ignited a passion to learn as much as possible, especially in regards to the global institutions that govern this world.

During his first year, Justin interned at a local wealth management firm called Exponent, where he was able to automate the conversion of client data to standardized pitch books which led to his passion in finance. His goal is to take his primary knowledge of the IT sector and blend it with the teachings of Mohnish Pabrai and Warren Buffet to become a better value investor. This has led him to join the Telfer Capital Fund as an analyst and to be a part of the Capital Markets Program.

Justin enjoys helping people and outside of school, his hobbies include longboarding, collecting coins, and playing chess.

Karver Girgis

Position: Portfolio Manager

Sector: Real Estate Investment Trusts

Profile: Karver is currently a fourth-year student, in the Bachelor of Commerce program, with a specialization in finance, at the Telfer School of Management.  He developed an interest in finance after taking an economics course in high school.  This interest led Karver to join the Telfer Capital Fund as an analyst.  Karver has completed the Canadian Securities Course, and worked at the Canada Revenue Agency as a Non-Resident Auditor last summer.  Karver hopes to use the skills he develops in the Capital Markets Program to get an internship this year that will hopefully lead to a career in the capital markets.  In his free time, Karver enjoys running, reading, and watching sports.

Bashir Hussen

Position: Portfolio Manager

Profile: Born and raised in Toronto, Bashir is currently entering his 4th year in the Bachelor of Commerce degree specializing in Finance. His passion for business and finance originates from his high-school days in Mississauga, and after long deliberation, he set his sights for the nation’s capital to pursue his post-secondary studies.  Bashir joined the Telfer Capital Fund to develop his financial skills, network with individuals that share the same passion, and to facilitate his transition to a career in private equity. Bashir is actively trying to learn, and improve the community around him. He plans on obtaining his CFA designating in the near-future. On his off time, he loves to read, spend time with family, and watch sports.

Melanie Lock Son

Position: Portfolio Manager

Sector: Technology, Media, and Telecommunication  

Profile: Melanie is a 4th-year student enrolled in a BCom with a specialization in Finance, at the Telfer School of Management. Born and raised in Mauritius (a little island off the east coast of Madagascar), she is fluent in English, French and Mauritian creole. It is her internship at MCB Capital Markets (Mauritius) – where she interned with the Fixed Income team that created the first multijurisdictional ETF in Africa – that sparked her interest in capital markets. She thus joined the Telfer Capital Fund a year later to expand her skills and knowledge. Melanie is highly involved within her community, where she gets the opportunity to give back, while developing transferable soft skills in different roles ranging from worker to leader.

Julia Magahey

Position: Portfolio Manager

Sector: Healthcare

Profile: Julia is a fourth- year finance student from London Ontario. As a transfer student to Ottawa, it wasn’t until she discovered the finance lab where her interest in finance truly began. She heard about the Capital Markets Program through colleagues and joining it became her goal. Julia sees this as an ideal opportunity to develop a deep understanding of all the intricacies and workings of capital markets, both nationally and internationally. To further her understanding and interest she is currently working on her Canadian Securities Certification. Outside of school Julia is a long time equestrian and spends much of her time running, cycling or planning her next scuba diving adventure.

Aarun Senathirajah

Position: Portfolio Manager

Sector: Consumer Staples

Profile: Aarun is a fourth-year accounting student at the University of Ottawa. He was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. Aarun has experience working as a Staff Accountant at Ernst & Young and as a Border Services Officer for the federal government. On campus, Aarun serves as the Vice-President of Finance for the Telfer Marketing Association, a Teaching Assistant for financial accounting and is the Vice-Captain of the University of Ottawa cricket team. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, fishing and playing basketball.

John Young

Position: Portfolio Manager

Sector: Financial Institutions Group

Profile: John was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Markham, Ontario. He began his journey at the University of Ottawa in Economics to pursue his interest for financial markets developed in high school. During his first year, he began to explore potential career paths, and found himself drawn to careers in capital markets and high finance. Seeking to lay the foundations for achieving these goals, he opted to change his field of study to focus on finance. He is now in the third year of his Bachelor of Commerce in Finance.

Pursuing his passion for finance and goal of working in capital markets led John to discover, and subsequently apply to, the Telfer Capital Fund. As a part of the Fund, John is now an Analyst with the Diversified Industries team and is eager to develop his valuation skills, understanding of financial markets, and be surrounded by passionate, like-minded individuals.

This past summer, John completed a CO-OP placement at the Trade Commissioner’s Service at Global Affairs Canada covering the Infrastructure sector. This experience introduced him to the intricacies of international trade, as well as developed his interest in infrastructure investing (and subsequently the private equity industry). Going forward, John is looking to leverage the industry and company research skills he developed as a Trade Commissioner, along with his experience on the Telfer Capital Fund, to pursue opportunities in various high finance careers.

Previously, John was a competitive swimmer for 11 years and maintained his spot as one of the Top 25 fastest in Canada for over 10 years. John enjoys weightlifting and building personal computers. He is also interested in all things automotive – including watching car reviews, keeping up to date on news, and is a fan of Formula 1.

William Dennis

Position: Portfolio Manager

Sector: Materials and Industrials

Profile: Born and raised in Guelph Ontario, Canada. Will developed a passion for business and by the time he graduated from High School he was the president of his local DECA chapter and has taken every business course at his local High School. He desire to move to a big city, but to also to be far enough from his parents house to justify living in residence, led him to pursue a degree in finance at the University of Ottawa. He found the finance laboratory on nhis first day of FROSH week and joined the Telfer Capital Fund as soon as he was eligible.

In his time at the TCF, he worked as a Junior Analyst in both the Tech and Materials Portfolio. During which, he was on the team for the revaluations of both Constellations Software (TSX: CSU) and Cascades (TSX:CAS). He then moved on to the position of Senior Materials Analyst where he pitched Cameco Corp. (TSC CCO) to the fund and revalued fund holding Wheaton Precious Metals (TSX:WPM). He then moved up to be the Portfolio Manager of the Materials sector and revalued fund holding DowDuPont prior to its three way split into Corteva (NYSE: CTVA), Dow (NYSE:DOW), DuPont (NYSE:DD). He has also taken on some additional roles in the Telfer Capital Fund, including Head of the Macroeconomic Committee and Head of New Analyst Education. His responsibilities were doubled in 2019 when the Materials sector and Industrials sector were combined.  In his free time he enjoys swimming, rock climbing, sailing, horsebacking riding, and hiking.

Jiacheng Tan

Position: Portfolio Manager

Sector: Financial Institutions Group

ProfileBorn and raised in Jiangsu Province, China, Jiacheng’s solid academic backgrounds and interest in Finance led him pursuing a Finance degree at University of Ottawa. He joined DECA and Telfer Finance Society, taking on a few case competitions while networking with industry professionals during his first two years at University.

In his first year at TCF, he mainly looked into and presented three companies for re-evaluation/pitch (NYSE: ALE, TSE: RCI.B, TSE: QBR.B). Additionally, he assisted with the attribution analysis and reporting of the style factors of the overall TCF portfolio. He strives to continue strengthening his financial modelling and coding skills, helping the fund secure more robust performance this year. While he is not working, Jiacheng enjoys watching good comedy shows, listening to some classical music, and managing his own investment portfolio at home.
