Justin Abraham

Status: Analyst

Profile: Justin is currently a third year student at the Telfer School of Management, specializing in Management Information Systems and Analytics (MISA) and finance. After moving to Ottawa, Justin took a notice for the astounding amount of diversity within in the city, which has opened up his perspective and ignited a passion to learn as much as possible, especially in regards to the global institutions that govern this world.

During his first year, Justin interned at a local wealth management firm called Exponent, where he was able to automate the conversion of client data to standardized pitch books which led to his passion in finance. His goal is to take his primary knowledge of the IT sector and blend it with the teachings of Mohnish Pabrai and Warren Buffet to become a better value investor. This has led him to join the Telfer Capital Fund as an analyst and to be a part of the Capital Markets Program.

Justin enjoys helping people and outside of school, his hobbies include longboarding, collecting coins, and playing chess.

Garrett Galvin

Status: Analyst, Financials

Profile: Born in and raised outside of Peterborough, Ontario, Garrett is a fourth year student pursuing his Bachelor of Commerce specializing in both Management Information Systems and Analytics & Finance. Garrett recently completed an eight month work term at Lumentum Holdings Inc. (LITE), a multibillion dollar telecommunications and technologies company, working closely with executive leadership. A strong set of communication, leadership, teamwork, and analytical skills have allowed Garrett to excel in his many academic, extracurricular, and professional experiences. With a knowledge base in Python, R, VBA for Excel, Tableau, FactSet, Bloomberg, Oracle and SAP, Garrett is equipped to not only utilize what it is that he has already learned but also to adapt and learn new job specific skills. Garrett is looking forward to pursuing learning opportunities in the various fields of high finance in which he can apply his differentiated work ethic to outperform expectations and seize opportunities.

Karver Girgis

Status: Analyst

Profile: Karver is currently a third-year student, in the Bachelor of Commerce program, with a specialization in finance, at the Telfer School of Management.  He developed an interest in finance after taking an economics course in high school.  This interest led Karver to join the Telfer Capital Fund as an analyst.  Karver has completed the Canadian Securities Course, and worked at the Canada Revenue Agency as a Non-Resident Auditor last summer.  Karver hopes to use the skills he develops in the Capital Markets Program to get an internship this year that will hopefully lead to a career in the capital markets.  In his free time, Karver enjoys running, reading, and watching sports.

Nolan How

Status: Analyst

Profile: Nolan is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) Degree from the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa. His interest in finance comes from his enjoyment of observing markets and reading financial news. Along with his schooling, Nolan is currently studying for the CFA designation. Last summer, Nolan worked as an Intern Analyst at Ex-Ponent Investment Management. Outside of the office, he is an avid golfer and enjoys spending time at the cottage.

Bashir Hussen

Status: Junior Analyst, Energy & Utilities

Profile: Born and raised in Toronto, Bashir is currently entering his 4th year in the Bachelor of Commerce degree specializing in Finance. His passion for business and finance originates from his high-school days in Mississauga, and after long deliberation, he set his sights for the nation’s capital to pursue his post-secondary studies.  Bashir joined the Telfer Capital Fund to develop his financial skills, network with individuals that share the same passion, and to facilitate his transition to a career in private equity. Bashir is actively trying to learn, and improve the community around him. He plans on obtaining his CFA designating in the near-future. On his off time, he loves to read, spend time with family, and watch sports.

Philip Kaczmarczyk

Status: Analyst

Profile: Raised in Barrie, Ontario, Philip came to the University of Ottawa to specialize in finance. During his second year, he met the Telfer Capital Fund members at the annual Women in Finance event organized by the Capital Markets Program. The highly driven members and mentors in the Telfer Capital Fund convinced him to pursue a career in capital markets. In his spare time, he enjoys reading both fiction and non-fiction, and playing hockey and baseball.

Melanie Lock Son

Status: Junior Analyst, TMT  

Profile: Melanie is a 3rd-year student enrolled in a BCom with a specialization in Finance, at the Telfer School of Management. Born and raised in Mauritius (a little island off the east coast of Madagascar), she is fluent in English, French and Mauritian creole. It is her internship at MCB Capital Markets (Mauritius) – where she interned with the Fixed Income team that created the first multijurisdictional ETF in Africa – that sparked her interest in capital markets. She thus joined the Telfer Capital Fund a year later to expand her skills and knowledge. Melanie is highly involved within her community, where she gets the opportunity to give back, while developing transferable soft skills in different roles ranging from worker to leader.

Julia Magahey

Status: Junior Analyst, Industrials/Materials

Profile: Julia is a third- year finance student from London Ontario. As a transfer student to Ottawa, it wasn’t until she discovered the finance lab where her interest in finance truly began. She heard about the Capital Markets Program through colleagues and joining it became her goal. Julia sees this as an ideal opportunity to develop a deep understanding of all the intricacies and workings of capital markets, both nationally and internationally. To further her understanding and interest she is currently working on her Canadian Securities Certification. Outside of school Julia is a long time equestrian and spends much of her time running, cycling or planning her next scuba diving adventure.

Jasdeep Punia

Status: Senior Analyst, Diversified Industries (Consumer Staples & Discretionary)

Profile: Born in Surrey, British Columbia and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. Jasdeep’s introduction to finance occurred in the 8th grade, after completing a finance course through the Mini-Enrichment Program, offered at the University of Ottawa. This led her to pursue a finance degree at the University of Ottawa.

During her 3rd year, she was selected to join the Telfer Capital Fund as 1 of 7 incoming analysts for the 2018 – 2020 cohort. She is currently a Senior Analyst for the Consumer Staples and Consumer Discretionary sectors.  This past summer (2019) she worked at IJW & Co. in the M&A Division as an Investment Banking Summer Analyst. She is currently a Lab Assistant in the Financial Research & Learning Lab at the University of Ottawa, helping students use financial software such as Bloomberg, CapIQ and Factset.

During her undergrad, so far, she has completed the Canadian Securities Course and will be taking the CFA Level I exam in July. After her undergrad, she is hoping to obtain her Chartered Business Valuators (CBV) designation.

Aarun Senathirajah

Status: Analyst

Profile: Aarun is a third-year accounting student at the University of Ottawa. He was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. Aarun has experience working as a Staff Accountant at Ernst & Young and as a Border Services Officer for the federal government. On campus, Aarun serves as the Vice-President of Finance for the Telfer Marketing Association, a Teaching Assistant for financial accounting and is the Vice-Captain of the University of Ottawa cricket team. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, fishing and playing basketball.

Liam Woodside

Status: Analyst – Financials Sector

Profile: Liam started his journey at the University of Ottawa in the Engineering faculty, studying Computer Science with a Minor in Management. Upon realizing that most of his spare time and energy were being directed towards entrepreneurship and the finance industry, he changed his degree to a Bachelor of Commerce (Option in Finance).

 Now starting his third year of studies at the University of Ottawa, Liam’s continued passion for finance led him to apply for a position in the Capital Markets Program, where he will be starting as an analyst in the financials sector. Current academic/professional goals include securing a Capital Markets internship at a Canadian financial institution and passing the CFA Level I exam prior to graduation.

 For his first CO-OP work term, Liam worked as a Sales & Marketing Specialist at a startup named Kegshoe. During the upcoming semester, Liam’s role has evolved to Partnerships Lead as he continues working there part-time.

In his spare time, Liam works as a badminton coach and still occasionally competes in tournaments around Canada. Other interests include bouldering, entrepreneurship, real estate and building computers.

Joy Xu

Status: Analyst

Profile: Joy is a third year Accounting student at the University of Ottawa. She has experience working in procurement reporting for the Federal Government and recently completed an internship in Assurance at PwC. On campus, Joy is the President of the Telfer Accounting Club and a teaching assistant for various courses.

John Young

Status: Analyst, Diversified Industries

Profile: John was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Markham, Ontario. He began his journey at the University of Ottawa in Economics to pursue his interest for financial markets developed in high school. During his first year, he began to explore potential career paths, and found himself drawn to careers in capital markets and high finance. Seeking to lay the foundations for achieving these goals, he opted to change his field of study to focus on finance. He is now in the third year of his Bachelor of Commerce in Finance.

Pursuing his passion for finance and goal of working in capital markets led John to discover, and subsequently apply to, the Telfer Capital Fund. As a part of the Fund, John is now an Analyst with the Diversified Industries team and is eager to develop his valuation skills, understanding of financial markets, and be surrounded by passionate, like-minded individuals.

This past summer, John completed a CO-OP placement at the Trade Commissioner’s Service at Global Affairs Canada covering the Infrastructure sector. This experience introduced him to the intricacies of international trade, as well as developed his interest in infrastructure investing (and subsequently the private equity industry). Going forward, John is looking to leverage the industry and company research skills he developed as a Trade Commissioner, along with his experience on the Telfer Capital Fund, to pursue opportunities in various high finance careers.

Previously, John was a competitive swimmer for 11 years and maintained his spot as one of the Top 25 fastest in Canada for over 10 years. John enjoys weightlifting and building personal computers. He is also interested in all things automotive – including watching car reviews, keeping up to date on news, and is a fan of Formula 1.
